J.G. writes, "At the [Hasty Pudding Club] we are all playing chess. It’s the best game I ever tried, and as none of us knows much of anything about it we have lots of fun." This is the first mention of J.G.'s membership in the Hasty Pudding Club, which was founded in 1795, and is considered the oldest social club in the United States.
