Laura Mitchell Kimball was the second wife of William S. Kimball, owner of the Kimball Tobacco Factory, and sister of the Rochester artist J. Guernsey Mitchell. With his wife and brother-in-law, Kimball amassed an important art collection, which was largely dispersed after Mrs. Kimball's death. The artwork associated with the Kimballs that has had the longest lasting impact upon the Rochester skyline is the statue of Mercury that J. Guernsey Mitchell erected on top of the Kimball Tobacco Company, later moved to the top of the Lawyers Cooperative Publishing Co. building.
