S. Alana Wolf-Johnson

Education: BA, Art; Art History Concentration, Georgia State University, 2011

Bio: Alana Wolf-Johnson is a fourth-year PhD student of Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester.

Driven by her interest in sonic representations of space, her dissertation examines the aural mobilities and mediations of the built environment in twentieth- and twenty-first century works of art. Prior to her graduate education, she was an arts and culture journalist and worked at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, the North Carolina Museum of Art, and served as artistic director of Public Acts of Art. Currently a board member of the Museum of Portable Sound, she is developing two curatorial projects for 2016, one addressing the materiality of photography in cinema, and another focused on sonic mobility and migration.

Wolf-Johnson is a research assistant to Dr. Peter Christensen for Architectural Biometrics, a project that uses the algorithmic data afforded by 3D scanning technologies to comparatively analyze serially-produced architecture. As an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in the Digital Humanities, she is exploring and developing digital methods of representing the aural environment that signal the sensory and temporal modalities of the soundscape.
