Launching the Genesee

Letter from James G. Averell to Emily Sibley Watson, October 28, 1900

1900-10-28

J.G. misses the launching of the Genesee, and noted that "Cousin Elsie (Elisabeth Storrer Atkinson Smith) evidently enjoyed the launching. It must have been quite a sight."  The boat was launched October 13th in Elizabeth, N.J., with family members and friends attending.  May Bragdon, in her October 9th, 1900 diary entry, notes that "Claude went to N.Y. next morning to Mr. Watson’s yacht launching which takes place tomorrow." Claude Bragdon designed the yacht's interiors, including stained glass windows.  He also designed a bookplate for the yacht's Library.

J.G. also comments on a football game between Harvard and a team from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, which competed in intercollegiate games between 1893-1917.  "We played the Indians yesterday. They gave us quite a scare by scoring on new formations in the first few minutes but the team got together and won 17 to 5."
